Deacon Notes - 2009

Homepage | Committee Notes

Welcome to the Board of Deacons Information age.

Our committee consists of 12 members who constitute the lay ministry of the church. Deacons are responsible for preparing the sanctuary for every worship service, preparing and administering the elements of Holy Communion, visiting the sick and elderly, assisting the pastor with Baptism and new member ceremonies and providing liturgists. They also try to lead the congregation into a deeper understanding and appreciation of the nature and mission of the church, and to better meet the spiritual needs of its members.

In conjunction with the Pastor, the Board of Deacons administers the Deacon’s Fund which offers emergency financial assistance to those in need.

These pages will provide a description of who we are and the details we need to 'keep things running' in the church.

The primary responsibility for the communion service and the elements (bread and juice) is with those who have the monthly deacon duties. The assistants are those who are scheduled for the following month. For example, if you are deacon of the month in December, you will assist with communion in November. In December, the January deacons will assist you. All communion is served in the front of the church with the congregation coming forward. Communion is served on the first Sunday every month, on Maunday Thursday (before Easter) and other times as desired.

If you cannot make a Sunday during the month when you are assigned, you are responsible for finding a replacement.

Meeting Prayer Assignments

The Deacons usually meet on the second Wednesday of each month (with a summer break). Each month we ask different members to open and close the meeting with a prayer, a reading, or some special words of their choice.
